On-ground adventures near Darwin

If you’re someone who loves a good trek off the beaten track, you’ll be thrilled with the walking trail adventures surrounding Darwin. Breathtaking natural and historical wonders, landscapes and wildlife are just the beginning of what’s in store if you decide to have a crack at these amazing hiking tours.

Larapinta Trail

Ranked as one of 20 of the best treks on the planet, the Larapinta Trail is a 231km path following along the rocky ridgelines of the West MacDonnell Ranges. If you’re brave, you can challenge yourself to hike the entire trail, or take on one or more of its 12 sections (all varying in length and difficulty). Each section is accessible by four-wheel drive, so you have the freedom to join or leave the trail at any of the trailheads.

Sleep under the stars each night as you weave through some of the world’s most ancient igneous and metamorphic rock, and nearly 600 species of flora. Set off on your own or take part in one of the available fully guided tours… and get ready for a Northern Territory adventure that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

Jatbula Trail

Beginning in the Nitmiluk Gorge and finishing at Leliyn (Edith Falls) – the Jatbula Trail is a 62-kilometre trek that runs along the western edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment. If you take part in the Jatbula trail, you’ll be following the footsteps of generations of Jowoyn, who traditionally walked this land over woodlands, riverine landscapes and sandstone plateau scrub.

Not for the faint of heart, the trail can be completed in either 5 days/ 4 nights or 6 days/5 nights. During which you’ll be setting up camp each night close to a stunning cascade, spring, or a plunging waterfall. Just to sweeten the experience, all waters along the Jatbula are crocodile free, so you can take a cool respite without the lingering stress of bite marks.

Experiences on the water

If you don’t mind adventures that involve a little bit of mud exposure, head down to the Darwin City Harbour and book a ride on one of Matt Wright’s airboat experiences. Boasting the longest ride time out of all Top End airboat tours, our adventure boats also have exclusive access to beautiful Darwin Harbour and its amazing marine environment.

No need to spend hours driving! just walk on down to Stokes Hill Wharf and get ready for the rush of a lifetime… all you need to bring is a hat, water bottle, and maybe a spare change of clothes (those hot laps on the mud flats can get messy).
