The Northern Territory and it’s 1.42 million square kilometres of land are home to an incredibly diverse range of natural landscapes, habitats, and environments. When travelling through the Northern Territory (NT) you’ll be met with boundless opportunities to observe, experience, and interact with some of the most unique wildlife in Australia (and quite possibly the world).
To truly experience the best of what this region has to offer, it’s important to understand the seasonal changes in the environment and the movements of the animals that inhabit it. The best times to observe and experience wildlife in the Northern Territory can vary depending on the location, species, and time of year you’re planning to visit.
As the storms of the wet season begin to calm down, the heat and humidity in the Top End begins to cool, and national parks begin to open their trails again. It’s due to these far more palatable weather conditions, ease of travel, and greater opportunity to participate in guided tours out of Darwin that most travellers regard the dry season as the best time to make the most of the Top End’s wildlife.
While lacking the abundance in the swelling rivers, vibrant greenery, and cascading waterfalls of the wet season, it’s far easier to get around and spot a wider variety of animal life during the dry. As streams start to dry, animals begin to come out of hiding to congregate permanent water sources. The months of October and September are also when you’ll be able to spot the highest concentration of bird species in this region.
Additionally, as national parks and walking trails open, and the tourist season kicks off there are far more tours, adventures, and guided experiences to participate in around the Top-End during this time of year.
